Design ChallengeTo implement an architectural strategy that breaks down very large programmatic requirements and, as a result, the seeming bigness of the proposed home. Design SolutionThe residence is conceived as having a "cottage" for the parents and son and a second volume for guests; these two volumes are both separated and joined by a double-height living area, which is partly interior and partly exterior and is heart of the house. Each programmatic element of the home is assigned a separate volume, and each has its own focal point, whether it is the lake, the heavily wooded hill side, the family "carving post", or the garden. The upper volume that is the guest and childrens' bedrooms is conceived as a light, wooden box that hovers above the primary living areas, including the master bedroom. This compression of the second floor into the ground-floor level is meant to create spatial interest and intimacy on the interior, while minimizing the houses presence from the exterior. |
